Heel Pain and Running

Running can be a good form of exercise and many enjoy this sport. However, like other physical sports, it can have negative effects on one’s feet. Heel pain is a common complaint among runners. This can be caused by overuse, plantar fasciitis, foot structure problems, or poor running form. It is critical that heel pain is treated promptly in runners to avoid further injury and complications. Plantar fasciitis is a condition where the plantar fascia, the ligament that runs from the heels to the toes on the soles of the feet, is overstretched or has slight tears. This results in heel pain, which is often worse after rest. People with flat feet or high arches represent examples of those with foot structure problems that put stress on the plantar fascia and can lead to heel pain after running. There are many other reasons heel pain may affect runners, and if this is something you suffer from, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist who can help you get to the root cause of the pain and offer effective treatment solutions.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M of Florida. Dr. Klein can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Installations and Falls Prevention

If you are a senior citizen or are currently caring for one, then it might be important to remember that doing what you can to prevent falls can help maintain proper foot health. This is because suffering a fall can lead to foot injuries and other conditions in a senior. In order to prevent falls, you might consider the potential benefits of adding installations in the senior’s home. For example, installing certain objects around the home, such as handrails on both sides of the stairwell, can give a senior extra support when navigating the stairs. Additionally, the installation of grab bars in the shower or tub may help senior citizens support themselves and gain balance when bathing. Lastly, and importantly, you might consider installing a raised toilet seat that has armrests to provide ample stability for the senior when using the restroom. All of these installations might serve to increase the senior’s stability and decrease the likelihood of suffering from a fall. It is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today for more information about preventing falls.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M from Florida. Dr. Klein will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Ledderhose Disease

Ledderhose disease, also known as plantar fibromatosis, is rare and impacts the bottom of the feet. This disease presents as a buildup of connective tissue in the feet, which forms into lumps or nodules on the fascia located on the sole of the foot. The fascia is a connective tissue that runs from the heel bone to the toes, and when it thickens, it can form nodules, which may be painless at first and, over time, may cause discomfort and pain. The skin may tighten, there might be itching and stinging in the surrounding area, and pain in the foot and ankle joints can develop. The cause of this ailment is not known. However, some believe that it is caused by genetics or environmental factors. Risk factors include regular alcohol consumption, liver disease, and diabetes. It most often strikes those in middle or older age and is more common in men than women. Treatment of Ledderhose disease depends on its severity. It is suggested that if you develop such nodules in your feet, you contact a podiatrist for an examination, diagnosis and healing options that are right for you.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M of Florida. Dr. Klein can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

Ankle Disorders

The ankle is made up of bones and supported by muscles and ligaments that stabilize the body. Ankle disorders can occur from damage to any part of the ankle. Common ankle disorders include sprains, fractures, and tendonitis. An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments in the ankle. A fracture is a break in an ankle bone. Tendonitis is when there is inflammation in the ankle tendons. Running, jumping, and overuse are the leading causes of ankle disorders. Other causes of ankle problems are falling, lack of flexibility and strength in the leg and foot, and excess strain on the Achilles tendon. Symptoms experienced from ankle issues will differ depending on the specific problem, but commonly one might experience pain, swelling, stiffness, and lack of mobility from ankle disorders. If you are having any problems with your ankles, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and to obtain a plan of treatment.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M from Florida. Dr. Klein will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.
