What Is a Gait Analysis?

A gait analysis is a method used to identify abnormalities in your walking or running pattern. This is a useful tool, especially for runners. Many people are afflicted with muscle imbalances, overpronated gaits, or other biomechanical issues that can make foot and ankle injuries more likely to occur while running. There are several types of gait analyses. An observational gait analysis involves a physical examination of your feet followed by a visual assessment of your gait. Following this, it should be easier to know what types of running shoes, orthotics, or other support you may need to correct any biomechanical problems. Other types of gait analyses may also measure force on your feet. To learn more about gait analyses, please consult with a podiatrist.

If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M from Florida. Dr. Klein can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Fungus and Athlete’s Foot

A fungal infection is the reason why many patients develop athlete’s foot. Typically, a rash may form between the toes and on the bottom of the foot. It may be accompanied by an unpleasant odor, and can cause severe redness and itching. It can develop from frequenting public swimming pools, locker rooms, and surrounding areas. Research has indicated the type of fungus that can cause this condition lives and thrives in these places and similar environments. Additionally there are certain medical conditions that can affect the skin, and may cause athlete’s foot. These can consist of impetigo and cellulitis. Mild relief may be found when the feet are clean and kept dry, and it may help to use an antifungal cream for mild cases. If your feet feel uncomfortable, and you think you may have athletes’ foot, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is often an uncomfortable condition to experience. Thankfully, podiatrists specialize in treating athlete’s foot and offer the best treatment options. If you have any questions about athlete’s foot, consult with Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M from Florida. Dr. Klein will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.

Prevention

The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying feet
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
  • Using shower shoes in public showers
  • Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
  • Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot

Symptoms

Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Scaly and peeling skin

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

Research has indicated that a staggering 30% of the world's population has the medical condition known as flat feet. People with flat feet who also enjoy tennis can experience challenges while playing the game, which can result in intense pain. They may notice their feet roll inward, which can affect the function of their ankle joints, and ultimately weaken their tennis play. Flat feet may also lead to additional issues involving the ankles and other parts of the foot. Research has indicated it may help to wear specific shoes while playing tennis, such as those that do not bend in the arch area, and that have adequate room for the toes to move freely. If you have flat feet, and would like additional information on preventing sports injuries and advice on proper footwear, please consult with a podiatrist.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M from Florida. Dr. Klein will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Foot Care For Men

Though foot care products and services are often marketed to women, having a good foot care routine is highly beneficial for everybody. Taking care of your feet improves their hygiene and overall well being. At home, you can soak your feet in a basin of warm water, exfoliate the heels and balls of your feet with a pumice stone to remove dry, dead skin, moisturize your feet with lotion, and clip your toenails straight across to prevent ingrown nails. You may want to give yourself a foot massage, which can help alleviate aches and pains, stretch the feet, and aid in relaxation. Taking time to pay attention to your feet can also help you detect if there are any problems, such as athlete’s foot, heel pain, or an injury. If you notice a foot problem, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M from Florida. Dr. Klein can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Am I More Likely to Develop Toenail Fungus?

A fungal toenail infection is a common problem caused by fungi growing in and around your toenails. This condition can change the appearance of toenails making them brittle, thickened, crumbly, or discolored. In more severe cases, the toenail may separate from the nail bed causing pain, a foul odor, and an increased risk of infection. Some people are more at risk for developing a toenail infection than others. People with other medical conditions like diabetes, peripheral artery disease, peripheral neuropathy, or a compromised immune system, are more likely to incur an infection. Previous injury or prior deformities of the toenails can also increase risk. Wearing shoes and socks that prevent air from reaching your feet, having skin that is moist for prolonged periods of time (often due to excessive sweating), and walking barefoot in warm, moist, or public places, like swimming pools and locker rooms, should be avoided. If you are suffering from any kind of toenail fungus please seek the care of a podiatrist.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M of Florida. Dr. Klein can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.
