Causes for Blisters on the Feet

The majority of runners realize the negative impact blisters on the feet can have on their chosen sport of running. The small areas appearing on the toes, heel, or bottom of the foot filled with fluid may be susceptible to infection if not treated in a prompt fashion. Research has shown the cause of this condition may be from increased friction and pressure that are inflicted on the toes. There may be several reasons for this to occur including wearing shoes and socks that fit incorrectly or having the skin become too soft as a result of excess moisture, which may typically originate from sweat. It’s important to properly measure your feet for a correct fit, allowing a half size larger than your regular shoe to accommodate the swelling that incurs as running progresses. Additional causes for blisters to develop may be enduring extreme sunburn or frostbite. The body will naturally protect the affected skin by encasing it in a fluid based environment, while healing takes place. If you are afflicted with a blister on your foot, it’s advised to consult with a podiatrist to learn how to properly treat this condition.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M of Florida. Dr. Klein can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

What is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Caused By?

If you experience discomfort and pain on the inside of your foot, you may have what is referred to as tarsal tunnel syndrome. This condition may also be called TTS, and may result from constant overuse of the ankle and foot. Activities that can cause this ailment to develop may include walking, exercising or running and can also occur from a serious injury. The surrounding area may become inflamed as a result of damaged nerves, which may have a negative impact in performing daily activities. Research has shown that early diagnosis and treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome may accelerate the healing process, which may typically begin with resting the foot. Severe cases of this condition may be treated with orthotics or physical therapy. It’s suggested to speak with a podiatrist as quickly as possible to ensure that a proper diagnosis is performed and the correct treatment options are discussed.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M of Florida. Dr. Klein can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Research has shown the differences between walking and running shoes. If you should engage in daily or frequent running or walking practices, it’s beneficial to be educated on the right types of shoes for the right activity. There are different forms of running, including racing and long-distance, and it’s important to choose the correct shoe. Running shoes have more cushioning in the heel and toe areas because of the impact the feet have on the ground while performing most running movements. The opposite is true of many people who choose to walk, and will most often need less cushioning. Lighter weight shoes are beneficial for fitness walkers to wear, and this may protect the feet, while providing ample cushioning. If you would like additional information about the differences between running and walking shoes, it’s suggested to consult with a podiatrist.

For more information about walking shoes versus running shoes, consult with Dr. Ian Klein, D.P.M from Florida. Dr. Klein can measure your feet to determine what your needs are and help you find an appropriate pair of footwear.

Foot Health: The Differences between Walking & Running Shoes

There are great ways to stay in shape: running and walking are two great exercises to a healthy lifestyle. It is important to know that running shoes and walking shoes are not interchangeable. There is a key difference on how the feet hit the ground when someone is running or walking. This is why one should be aware that a shoe is designed differently for each activity.

You may be asking yourself what the real differences are between walking and running shoes and the answers may shock you.

Differences

Walking doesn’t involve as much stress or impact on the feet as running does. However, this doesn’t mean that you should be any less prepared. When you’re walking, you land on your heels and have your foot roll forward. This rolling motion requires additional support to the feet.

Flexibility – Walking shoes are designed to have soft, flexible soles. This allows the walker to push off easily with each step.
